Protect Your Home During Rainy Season
Practical tips tailored for Cambodian homes — from wooden houses in the provinces
Cambodia's rainy season brings welcome relief from the heat — but it also brings floods, humidity, mold, and unexpected repairs. Whether you live in a wooden house in Kampong Cham or a concrete flat in Phnom Penh, a little preparation goes a long way.
Roof & drainage inspection
• Check roof tiles or zinc sheets for cracks and holes before June
• Clear gutters and downpipes of leaves and debris monthly
• Inspect flat concrete roofs for pooling areas — patch with waterproof sealant
• For wooden houses, check beams under the roof for rotting signs
Flood prevention around the home
• Raise electrical sockets and appliances at least 30 cm off the floor in flood-prone areas
• Sandbag doorways before heavy storms if you're near low-lying roads
• Keep drainage channels in the yard free from rubbish and soil build-up
• Store important documents in waterproof bags or elevated storage
Mold & humidity control
• Ventilate rooms daily — open windows on dry mornings to circulate air
• Wipe walls and window frames with a vinegar solution to prevent mold
• Use silica gel packets inside wardrobes and shoe cabinets
• Avoid piling wet laundry indoors — use a covered but airy drying area
Electrical safety
• Never use appliances with wet hands or on wet floors
• Check outdoor wiring and junction boxes for water ingress
• Unplug electronics during strong thunderstorms
• Replace damaged extension cords immediately — water and exposed wires are deadly
Pest control
• Seal gaps in walls and floors — rain drives mosquitoes, ants, and rats indoors
• Empty standing water in flower pots, buckets, and old tires weekly to stop dengue mosquito breeding
• Spray natural repellents (lemongrass, citronella) around doors and windows
• Check wooden furniture for termite trails after heavy rain
Wood & structure care
• Apply wood varnish or sealant on exposed wood before the season starts
• Lift wooden furniture slightly off the floor using rubber feet to avoid moisture damage
• Repaint exterior walls with waterproof paint to prevent peeling and damp patches
• Check for cracks in plaster walls and seal before rain gets inside
